Freezing Temperatures Expected
According to the National Weather Service, an extreme cold watch has been issued from Saturday evening through early next week. Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 5 to 15 possible, with the coldest values Sunday night into Monday morning. A hard freeze is also possible Saturday night and Sunday night with lows in the 10s to lower 20s. Some areas north of I-10 may remain below freezing all day on Sunday. Now is the time to prepare! Protect people, pets, plants and pipes from cold weather!
Please take time to check on your neighbors, especially our elderly residents.
LOCATE YOUR WATER SHUT OFF
Make sure everyone knows where the property shutoff valve is located at in the event pipes burst. In most cases the shutoff valve can be found on the side of the house. If you are not sure where the shut off valve is, you may contact the Water Authority at 713-465-8318. MVWA staff is standing by day or night to respond to any water emergency.
PROTECT EXPOSED WATER PIPES
Insulate water pipes in unheated and other drafty areas, such as crawl spaces, attics, and garages. Most hardware and plumbing supply stores carry insulation material to help pipes from freezing.
TURN OFF OUTSIDE FAUCETS
Shut off outside faucets and remove connected hoses. Wrap faucets with insulation material or towels. Turn off automatic irrigation systems.
DRIP INDOOR FAUCET ONLY IF NEEDED
If you feel your pipes still may freeze after insulating them, drip cold water from an indoor faucet. The faucet selected should be the furthest distance from the main line entering the house. A small drip is sufficient, a running trickle is not needed.
BEFORE LEAVING TOWN
Turn off your water supply at the shutoff valve. Set your thermostat no lower than 55 degrees.
Make sure to bring pets inside where it is warm. You may also want to bring plants in or cover them if they are vulnerable to freezing conditions.
